Six Sigma is not complete without having understand its own challenges. A lot of positive sides are there but still there is a negative side too which one must keep in mind in order to come to a final statement regarding Six Sigma methodology of process improvement.

Many Small and Medium sized organizations often consider Six Sigma as an expensive and unnecessary process due to high cost associated with its certification and courses. These organizations often find Six Sigma as a time consuming process and do not favor it. Some obstacles and challenges that often stand in the way of positive results from Six Sigma includes:

· Lack of Support: Some of the common barriers to support are:

ü Leaders those are unfamiliar with the Six Sigma process.

ü Leaders willing to pursue improvements initially but gradually lose interest due to long course durations.

ü Staff that is fearful of change/Employees that are resistant to change.

ü Department heads or employees who constantly champion their own processes.

· Lack of Resources or Knowledge: Lack of Resources can be a challenge due to high costs. Lack of Knowledge about how to use/implement Six Sigma is a major issue in Small and medium sized organizations. These companies cannot afford to hire dedicated resources to handle continuous process improvement. Such organizations do not pay much attention to Six Sigma certifications.

· Poor Project Implementation: Implementation of Six Sigma methodology in the very first project requires trained professionals who have the desired expertise to implement it and who can train the staff in each and every aspect of project execution that how will Six Sigma impact it if not done right. Thus, Poor Project implementation takes place due to lack of expertise at all levels for Six Sigma implementation.

· Data Access Issues: Some data related challenges include:

ü Important process metric not being captured

ü Use of manual data processes

ü Automated data processes

ü Skewed Data

ü Lengthy times, and industry or company compliance rules

· Concerns about using Six Sigma in a specific industry: Six Sigma originated in the manufacturing industry and many of the concepts and tools are still taught in the context of a factory or an industrial environment. Because of this, organizations often believe that this method will be too difficult to be implemented in other industries. In Reality, Six Sigma can be customized to any industry.

Thus, Six Sigma is a master of process improvement and lean manufacturing but still there are lot of challenges related to it that hampers the successful implementation of Six Sigma methodology in various industries. We all shall go for a lean six sigma training programme to understand it’s methodology and execution which can be applied to any domain and industry across all type of organizations.
